Chemical Testing
Chemical testing is vital for ensuring the safety of your domestic water supply, whether you rely on a private well or a mainsfed system. In Ireland, annual testing for key chemical indicators is strongly recommended. Essential checks include nitrate, ammonia, pH, iron, manganese, and water hardness. For older homes, testing for lead is especially important, as legacy pipework can pose a hidden risk. It’s also crucial to monitor for total coliforms and E. coli to ensure bacterial safety see our Biological Testing section for more details.
Key chemical tests include:
- Nitrate and Nitrite: Especially important in agricultural areas to detect fertiliser runoff.
- Iron and Manganese: Can cause staining and unpleasant taste or odour.
- Lead: Highly recommended for properties built before the 1980s.
- pH and Conductivity: Indicate acidity and overall mineral content.
- Total Hardness: Measures calcium and magnesium levels.
- Ammonia: Signals potential recent contamination.
- Fluoride: Ensures compliance with drinking water regulations.
- Organic Compounds: Testing for pesticides, PAHs, or PFAS may be necessary in areas with industrial or heavy agricultural activity.
Testing should be carried out annually, ideally after heavy rainfall when contamination risks are highest. At Aqua Consult, our representatives are ready to collect your sample and have it tested through an accredited private laboratory.
